The last 14 days have been frustrating and funny - work's have its ups and downs. I'm having a day off today because I've got a hospital appointment - so yay! Day Off! Although I gotta work Sunday to make up for it, so not so yay.
Work's starting to grow on me. Still haven't been published, which annoys the shit out of me, but so far have completed three stories and am finishing another by Friday. Been trying to pitch stories - but so far they've either already been assigned or they get given to someone else! Meh.
My first day of work, Mum comes to me serious-faced and tells me, "if you have to go toilet, go okay! Don't hold it in!" Like, wtf? Mum has a strange fixation about this peeing thing. I remember all the first-days-of-school, especially in kindergarten and lower primary, when she'd tell me earnestly, "if the t'cher dun let you go toilet, you PEE! you PEE ON THE SEAT!!!!!" The zeal on her face would be extraordinary. Like seriously, I had explicit instructions each year to wet myself.
Anyway, no misadventures yet in that department, although my BIG BOSS caught me buying shoes yesterday at about 5pm (office hours. my boots were killing me. I haven't worn them in a year) - which cannot be good.
The computer I work on is a joke - it's got 128mb of RAM and a speed of 178. Fwoar. Plus on my first day, IT was reluctant to assign a personal profile because "you might not be sitting here tomorrow" (the n00bs were not allocated permanent desks yet). Second day: still no personal profile, which meant no access to
Email,
Intranet,
Integrated editing software. WTF right? I was supposed to do journalism with a ouija board and a pencil?? I gave IT my "you've-got-to-be-kidding-me-get-me-fixed-up-right-now-or-you-die" face, better known as my ANGRY face and he quickly set me up. Not so hard there!
It dawns on me that journalism is little more than a waiting game. Stories can be done in a snap, but waiting for interviewees to get back to you just takes up the whole day.
The song of the day (and no surprises here) is: The Smiths - Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now
I was happy in the haze of a drunken hour
But heaven knows I’m miserable now
I was looking for a job, and then I found a job
And heaven knows I’m miserable now
In my lifeWhy do I give valuable time
To people who don’t care if I live or die ?
Two lovers entwined pass me by
And heaven knows I’m miserable now
I was looking for a job, and then I found a job
And heaven knows I’m miserable nowIn my life
Oh, why do I give valuable time
To people who don’t care if I live or die ?
What she asked of me at the end of the day
Caligula would have blushed
Oh, you’ve been in the house too long she said
And I (naturally) fled
In my life
Why do I smile
At people who I’d much rather kick in the eye ?
